The New Year

     The New Year is a national festival. Generally it falls on the 14th of April. The Sinhalese and the Hindus celebrate it with great enthusiasm.

     People prepare themselves for this festival for several days. They clean their houses and paint them. Parents by new clothes for themselves and their children. They also make a lot of sweets for this festival.

     The New Year has its own customs. People do everything at an auspicious time. They light the hearth at an auspicious time. Then the members of the family take the New Year meal at another auspicion time. After this, children offer betel to their elders and worship them. Children get a lot of presents from their elders. People visit their friends and relatives for several days. Children light fire crackers and enjoy themselves. They play various games and go on trips as well. The New Year customs end with the oil anointing ceremony.
